Nadine,
I’m a little late in this conversation, but not too late to add my “2 cents” in support of this wonderful educator — Sr. Mary Therese is amazing! I also met St. Mary Therese through ICE. She has been a regular volunteer at the ICE Conference, and is very deserving of her pink jacket. And, although she is from the ICE-Cold chapter, she has been a frequent attendee at NICE events too. She may be retired from teaching, but her desire to continually grow in knowledge of ways that technology enhances teaching and learning, and her willingness to share that knowledge with others, is truly inspiring! What a privilege and an honor it is to be able to say, “I know her!”

Thanks Vicki for clarifying that particular session. For me, that experience reminds me that we need to be sensitive to everyone’s position in our conversation. We all come with our own pre-conceived notions and our own life experience. Even though I’m used to using a back channel and it seems like a great strategy for interaction with the audience because I’ve seen it work at our state conference. Not everyone has participated in that kind of participation. When I’m faced with an unfamiliar situation, I jump in and give it a shot – not everyone is like me (and thank goodness for that!)

This is a challenging one – to me, the push back was because not everyone in the audience could respond IN the backchannel because they were disconnected – they were frustrated they were left out and wanted to respond – so they voiced in the “front channel” — it was a digital divide among us. To me, technology used well should always bring us closer together not pull us apart and really, I like the backchannel to stay in the back – for those who wish to participate to join in and those who do not, to just be able to ignore it!

Thank you for the reflection – it was a good conversation for many — although for some of us it was a bit tough! Thank you again for sharing your thoughts!

Having a mentor is a wonderful gift. I have gone 5 years in education, 3 in classroom, 2 in management without a close mentor. I am weaker for it. Sr. Mary Therese sounds like a wonderful leader and your relationship is making you a better leader too. Thanks for sharing and reminding us all of the benefit of mentors.

I love your approach to Scott’s Leadership Day 2009 challenge. Why not recognize a leader who is doing it right? How lucky you are to have her right there with you. Each of us needs a mentor and we don’t ofter enough show them our appreciation. She is trul inspiring to all of us who read about her in your post.
